South Fork American River

Had a great day on the American River South Fork today. Each time I go I get better and better.Working on eddying out and peel outs are so fun! Fun to feel the river rushing underneath you. I have been taking different routes through the C to G run, a sign I'm getting better/making progress according to someI'm on the side of kayakers who likes to progress slowly up to the Class III runs, accomplishing milestones at-a-time. My last two runs down this portion of the river I have made a point to…See More

"AWESOME!!! That is some crazy stuff. I can't imagine doing those runs. Maybe someday huh. But I did see my boat, a 08 jackson super hero, in a few of those videos (with the head cams) and it makes me feel more like I'm in a stable boat…"

"Great Info above!!! I'm using a $300 Werner one piece Bent Shaft "Player" after using a $100 Carlisle Magic 2 piece. In my opinion, the Carlisle is going to be just great for any flat water paddling! I would even use that on rivers…"

Profile Information

What kind of Paddling are you into?
Sit-on-top Kayaks, Flatwater (Lakes and mellow rivers), Playboating, River Running, Creek Boating, Canoes, Rafting
What boats do you own? (kayaks, canoes, rafts, etc.)
Jackson Super Hero 8'...For medium to large (150 lbs to 250 lbs) boaters to paddle rivers upright and in control, surf waves, or handle big water on the surface. Able to run anything. Designed to handle the largest diversity of water possible...

Ocean Kayak Frenzy -- 10' SOT Kayak. I have used this kayak for surfing waves on the American River south fork and lower fork. Never had a capsize in up to class II+ rapids such as Barking Dog on the AR. Class III and you start losing control in holes/waves.

Can be a little dicey in super shallow rock gardens due to a hull the length of the boat. But really fun and safe for beginners (like me before I bought my Hero)

Frenzy is great all around boat because ou can fish, run rivers, flat water, etc.
Favorite place to paddle?
American River South Fork - Chili Bar, the Gorge, Coloma to Greenwood Ck
Most memorable paddle?
The Gorge 7-29-09: they just keep getting better each time I get out...
How long have you been paddling?
1-3 year

I'm thinking of buying a pyranha BURNS tomorrow. Ever hear anyone say anything good or bad about them?

HI Woody, and thanks for the positive feedback on the shuttle service. We are working hard to get it ready and going for this season, and will hopefully be starting it up again in the next week or two. I second the note from Geoff regarding GCP.
Thanks for the thought on the Roll video as well, and I'm glad it was helpful! I'd look forward to meeting you as well. (<: You can often find me around the River Store during the season, the only scruffy, bearded red-head usually, . (<:
FYI, I'm not sure what you have had in the way of instruction at this point, but I might also suggest a class to help get you involved with some other folks of similar skill level. It often works out for the people in a class together to become paddling buddies and help each other progress. (<: If nothing else you should consider the Swiftwater Rescue class before you get much further into your paddling career. (<:
Cheers!
