Chris Watson replied to Phil Magistro's discussion The Scoop
"The scoop works. One of my clubs hosted a survival skills session over the summer and I attended and our final exercise was an all-in. I had a simulated broken right arm and this was the method we used to get me back in the boat. The hardest parts…"

Phil Magistro replied to Wade Higgins's discussion A strange request for a kayak
"Wade, A few years back, I did a trip with NOLS in Feathercraft folding boats. They are a bit tricky to assemble, but pack up about the size of a large expedition backpack and are really convenient. They are also very seaworthy...we did a 30 day…"

Phil Magistro replied to Phil Magistro's discussion The Scoop
"No doubt. It's a pain in the rear to pump out a swamped cockpit. So I can see a place for the alphabet rescues in calm water, but if I could only learn one rescue, I think this would be it. But it was -really- easy to get Victim back in the…"

Geoff Jennings replied to Phil Magistro's discussion The Scoop
"I agree. I think, or it's solo equivalent, the re-enter and roll, are easier and more likely to work in most real world, rough situations than many of the assisted rescues. But I think it's important to have a full "bag of…"

The Scoop

So Apryle and I went to a fun seminar at Canoecopia presented by Kelly Blades. He pretty much tossed out the T Rescue as too much work and not ideal for extreme conditions. In its place, he suggested an alternative rescue technique...the scoop (or "hands of god"). Basically, Victim is in the water, holding onto the swamped kayak. Rescuer paddles up on the other side of the boat. Doesn't matter which way Rescuer is facing. Rescuer tilts the swamped boat towards Victim, flooding the cockpit.…See More

"Jackie, Like Taylor said, lots of options. You said you expect to get our 4-8 times each summer. More specifically, how do you plan to use the boat? Are you going to be doing short day tours, long day tours, overnights? I know that Superior gets…"

Seymour Narrows

So, Apryle and I are planning this Inside Passage expedition. We're planning to stop in Campbell River, BC for a variety of reasons before heading north, which to some extent precludes the "standard" route across from Vancouver Island to Texada Island and then up through Yuculta and Dent Rapids.Instead, it looks like we'll probably have to chance things either at Seymour or Surge Narrows. Both look pretty intense (for fully loaded touring boats, anyhow). Any recommendations? Have any of you…See More

Go Wild Inside Passage Expedition 2009

Apryle Craig and I will be embarking on a sea kayaking expedition along the British Columbia coast to examine and document the effects of salmon farming on the environment and coastal communities.

The “Go Wild” Expedition, named such in support of wild salmon, will follow the historical Inside Passage route, starting in Gig Harbor, Washington, continuing north along the British Columbia coast, and concluding in the glacial waters of Alaska. Their four-month-long journey will begin May 5, 2009 and cover over 1,280 miles using only human-power.
