Geoff M,
I'd second Geoff J's vote on a used composite boat. You might be able to find used plastic surf boats, but there aren't that many out there.
Another manufacturer is Valley, and also Fluid makes one surf boat.
Mega, and Fluid make plastic versions of their boats.
Savanah Canoe and Kayak had quite a few used surf boats for sale last spring--don't know their current inventory. Otherwise, look here, on boater talk, and ebay for used boats.
Good luck!
Geoff,
I'm shorter than you, and a bit heavier, so I can definately tell you that there are going to be limited boats that work for that size, and I've paddled most all of them.
I've got a friend with a Mega Megatron for sale. It's a sweet boat, I surfed one for years, and just switched to the smaller Scarab. I've sold mine already, but his is a top end X-Tech construction. VERY light and very strong. It did have a repair done on the nose. New, it's a $2500 boat, and he's asking $1000.
do you have an eskimo roll?
1st you ask why plastic of course the main reason is cost, I've seen some plastic yaks for right around 1K while the nice fiberglass boats were double that and the super cool composite boats were still a little bit more than that.
I'm 6'4" 220lb
I've been involved in the marine industry foe nearly 25yrs. with a large portion of that setting up hi-performance outboard powered boats, I'm well versed on the benefits of using a laid-up hull verses a injection molded one and would much prefer to get a true composite hull with really sharp edges and a ultra rigid hull.
I think your point about a used boat is a gr8 one I'm definitely looking in that direction now
Geoff,
First, why plastic? There are tons of great composite boats designed for the surf, more designs and sizes than plastic. It's surprisingly tough, and if it does get damaged, can be repaired good as new.
The two boat manufactures you see the most in the States (where are you? ) are Mega Kayaks http://www.surfkayaks.com/ and Murky Waters http://www.murkywaterkayak.com/kayakdesigns_surf.html, though you may also find boats from Dick Wold and PS composites. You can often fine nice, high performance kayaks available used for very reasonable prices. As an example, I've got one for sale right now for $600, a Murky Waters Twist...
This is theee most awesome use of a kayak, I love the salt-water and I wanna know more.
Who makes the best surk-kayaks who makes a plastic surk-kayak I'm talking a flatbottom surf-kayak not just some tossed aside white-water yak, is there anything specific in the way of paddle design what is the most ideal blade shape for this activity
