Class 2 Whitewater Swimming - Where's My Skirt?
My first attempt at running a river in a rec-yak did not go well. I had fun. I learned.
Beats sitting at home!

Jason,
Current Adventures Kayak School is the place to go. For full disclosure, they do support this site, and I have worked for Dan over the years, but I can recommend them without hesitation. Great folks, and great instructors. Quality program all around. They are in Coloma, right on the South Fork American, and have classes year round. Depending on where you are in Lake Tahoe, they are an hour or so away.
I think there might be some folks offering classes at the whitewater park in Reno, but I'm not certain and have no personal experience to recommend them. Highly recommend getting in touch with the folks at http://www.currentadventures.com
Tell them I said Hi when you call. =)
As for boats, it depends a lot on what type of paddling you are interested. If you paddle a lot, there is a good chance you'll end up with two or more. If I were living in Tahoe, I'd definately want a creek boat or river runner for harder runs, and playboat for easy runs and for taking to the Reno and Sparks whitewater parks. The River Store in Coloma offers a program, I forget the details, where you can pay a minimal fee and demo their impressive fleet of demo boats. Highly recommend that, as the feel of the boat can be a very personal thing.
I am into whitewater! My wife and I need to learn how to roll a lot better before we go out there... We did a good deal of rafting the last couple years, the Tuolumne, Merced, Upper Klamoth, Arkansas at record water, but just starting to get into Kayaking.
